Dear Greta,
We always take our annual vacation with our closest friends, and we ' ve made some wonderful memories together over the years. But now that their kids are older, they ' re much more active, loud, and constantly on the go. By the end of the trip, I come home feeling like I need another vacation just to recover! My husband and I would really love to enjoy a peaceful, relaxing getaway by ourselves this year, but I don ' t want to hurt our friends ' feelings or make them think we don ' t enjoy spending time with them. What ' s the best way to gracefully bow out of this year ' s trip without damaging the friendship?

Honesty, delivered with kindness, is your best approach. Let your friends know how much you ' ve enjoyed your vacations together and how much you value their friendship. Then simply explain that this year you and your husband need some time together and have decided to take a quiet trip alone to reconnect and recharge. Avoid mentioning their children ' s behavior- there ' s no need to make it personal, and they are likely to get offended if you do. Instead, keep the focus on your own needs. Suggest planning a weekend visit, dinner, or another outing later this summer so they know you ' re not stepping away from the friendship, just trying something different this vacation season.
