Breed All About It!

Spotlight on: The Australian cattle dog

Description: Australian Cattle Dogs are a mix of Blue Merle Collies, Kelpies, and Dingos. This breed ' s weather-resistant outer coat is short and straight, with a dense undercoat, and the coloring is blue or red speckle. Blue includes black, blue, or tan markings. Red speckle means red all over, including the undercoat.
Temperament: Australian Cattle Dogs( also known as Blue Heelers) are very intelligent and active, and are highly devoted to their owners. Originally bred to herd cattle across rough terrain in Australia, they thrive on having a job to do and taking part in daily activities. Very loyal and protective of their people, they make excellent watchdogs. One of the smartest dog breeds, they are quick learners, but can also be independent and stubborn. This intelligence makes them excellent working dogs but can make them a challenge for first-time dog owners. They thrive on challenges and need regular mental stimulation. ACDs tend to be wary of outsiders, but can be great family dogs. They need owners, though, who understand their particular needs. This independent breed can be a challenge to raise and live with- you must be a leader yourself. They can also be destructive when bored, and tend to chew- a lot. Australian Cattle Dogs have an intense herding instinct. Because they were bred to herd and chase, that ' s what they do- herd and chase just about anything, including cars. Even if they aren’ t working cattle, they may try to herd other animals or even humans, nipping at heels to encourage movement. If you have children, you might see this behavior in play. Consistent and positive training, as well as constant physical and mental activity, is suggested. They need early socialization, and exposure to different people, sights, sounds, and experiences. They are best suited to active owners, in an environment where they get plenty of physical and mental stimulation to provide an outlet for their natural energy and bright mind. Because of their intelligence, loyalty, and work drive, they are often used in search-and-rescue, police work, and therapy.
Average Height / Weight: Cattle Dogs stand between 17- 20 inches tall, and their weight ranges from 30- 50 pounds.
Health Issues: This breed is generally healthy, but can be prone to Progressive Retinal Atrophy, Hip Dysplasia, and Deafness.
Exercise: These dogs love challenges associated with sports. Frequent walks and other vigorous exercise, such as running or hiking, is a necessity. Australian Cattle Dogs thrive in activities such as agility, obedience, rally, flyball, and flying disc competitions. A fenced-in yard is a plus. They excel when they have a task to complete. If they do not get enough exercise, their boredom could result in destructive behavior.
Life Expectancy: 12- 16 years.
Grooming: These dogs shed year-round, and " blow " their coat once or twice a year. A once a week brushing should suffice to take care of their low maintenance coat.
