Back-to-School Pet Safety
by Cheyenne Pratt, Technician, Calico Creek Veterinary Clinic
As summer winds down, it’ s time for parents to start preparing for back-to-school. Every year around this time, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center sees an increase in pet poisonings, many involving children’ s lunch bags and backpacks. Schedules become hectic enough once the school year starts, the last thing you need is a pet emergency. Get your kids into the habit of putting their things away after school and keeping backpacks and lunch bags in an area inaccessible to pets. There are a number of items commonly found in backpacks that could be a danger to animals.
Art supplies: Most children’ s art supplies are non-toxic, but oil-based paints and colored pencils may contain toxins. The same goes for certain glues, modeling clays, and markers. If the product has“ AP” listed on the packaging, it’ s a non-toxic approved product.
Small toys / balls: Both are choking hazards and can cause intestinal blockages if swallowed.
Homemade Slime: Some of the ingredients are toxic to pets.
Ear buds: Pets may put ear buds in their mouth, risking choking or foreign body obstruction.
Hand sanitizer: Because of the alcohol content, large amounts of sanitizer can be toxic.
Erasers: Another choking hazard or possible intestinal blockage.
Paperclips: Can cause damage to the intestines.
Gum / candy: Sugar-free candies and gum may contain xylitol, which is highly toxic to pets. Chocolate is also toxic.
Medications: Albuterol inhalers, ADHD medication, and pain relievers can be dangerous to pets.
Common lunch box toxins include: grapes, raisins, onions, macadamia nuts, moldy food, peanut butter containing xylitol, cold packs, and fruit pits / seeds.
Curious pets may see an available back pack or lunch box as an opportunity to explore, which could quickly lead to trouble. An emergency can be easily avoided by ensuring pets can’ t reach these things.
