Web of Life Activity
The seventh-grade science classes were learning about interactions within ecosystems; more specifically food chains and food webs. In this activity, each student pulled a biome out of a hat( literally). They then created a food chain of organisms that would be found in that biome. They created their food chain as a slideshow with the forest slide giving details about their biome. Their next slide would then provide a picture and 3-5 facts about their chosen producer from their biome. Included on the producer slide, the students were given a specific amount of energy that the producer supplied to their food chain. Using the ten percent rule, the students then calculated the amount of energy at each trophic level for a primary consumer, secondary consumer, and a tertiary consumer. Pictures, details, and amount of energy were included for each of these consumers on the next three slides.
When all of the food chain slide shows were complete, they were printed and each student cut their food chain out. We then put all of the food chains for the six biomes together and created large food webs for each area. This allowed the students to see how the organisms interact with each other and how some organisms may exist at different trophic levels within the same food web. The students were quite proud of the finished product and enjoyed picking out their food chain as part of the larger project.
First day of the 2025-2026 school year is Wednesday, August 20th. Student are to report to homerooms by 8:05 am. Kindergarten orientation is Monday, August 18th at 5:50pm. 7th Grade orientation is also Monday, August 18th, from 6 – 7 pm.
