Question : " How can I safely clean my dog ' s ears ?"
Answer : It ' s always important to inspect the general condition of your dog ’ s ears , as wax or dirt buildup is quite common . Long , floppy-eared dogs , such as Cocker Spaniels and Basset Hounds , are more susceptible to problems , but all dogs should have their ears cleaned occasionally . Dogs build up wax much quicker than people do . Get your cleaning supplies ready before you start . An ear cleaner , cotton balls , and a towel is all you will need . DO NOT USE Q-TIPS ! A Q-tip could push the debris down into the lower canal and cause damage . Have your dog sit or stand near you so you can look easily into his ears . If all you see is dirt or normal ear wax , you can begin cleaning your dog ’ s ears . You can make an easy home cleaning mixture with 50 % white vinegar and 50 % water . Put the mixture in a small squirt bottle , and put several drops in your dog ’ s ears . The ear canal is shaped like an “ L ,” so you have to work the liquid down in . Let your dog shake his head . ( That ' s where the towel comes in handy !) That will bring out the dirt and debris . With a cotton ball , gently wipe out the ear . If you smell a strong odor or see drainage of fluid from the ear ( clear or gray / brown ), thick waxy material , or any scratches , scabs , or wounds , it could indicate an infection . DO NOT clean the ears yourself if you think they are infected . Ear infections can lead to pain and discomfort , and possibly even hearing loss , so you will want to get your dog to a veterinarian as quickly as possible .
