PBL & Community
Three years ago , Jersey Shore Elementary School ’ s STEAM Committee ( Science , Technology & Engeering , Environmental Literacy & Sustainability ) created an action plan for the use of a cold frame , a small structure that protects plants from cold temperatures and frost . The cold frame would serve as a transfer station for the seedlings started inside on grow carts . Once the seedlings grew , the small plants could be transferred to the cold frame before being planted into the Community Garden or the Butterfly Garden .
However , potential to foster community relationships was not fully recognized until this school year . In the fall , the wooden base and the shelving units of the cold frame were built by the District ’ s CTE department , under the direction of teacher , Mr . Heath Rager . The PTO , and the Jersey Shore School ’ s Foundation provided the funding for the wood . In addition , the district used combined funding from the JS School ’ s Foundation and an EITC Grant to purchase grow carts . Twenty-eight teachers , in grades K-5 , chose to pursue at least two project-based learning activities that utilized the grow carts .
The intermediate life skills classroom , under the leadership of teacher , Ms . Anna Berger , volunteered to be in charge of revitalizing the school ’ s community garden . Prior to transferring plants to the garden , the Director of Maintenance , Mr . Mark Wall , approved a member of his team , Mr . Doug Garner , to mentor four 4th grade students to prepare the garden beds and create a red-rock path to connect the two gardens .
Last summer , the school enlisted the support of Lycoming County Master Gardener , Mrs . Beth Amundson . She provided the teachers and students support throughout the year and continues to tend to the garden in the summer . The JS Garden Club volunteered to plant flowers in the Butterfly Garden with each 3rd grade student , and weeded and spread mulch on the garden beds . Students in our YMCA Summer Latchkey program tended to seedlings , then transferred them into beds in the community garden . Jersey Shore Elementary is grateful for the Community partnerships that provided physical materials , support through volunteers , and funding and / or donations to support teachers and students engaged in project-based learning , including : Baker Creek Heirloom Company , Dewalt Greenhouse , Leonard Landscaping , Lowe ’ s in Mill Hall , Soergel Home & Garden in Wexford , PA , and Weis Markets of Jersey Shore .
