Celebrating 50 years of CWGA presidents

When I was a principal of a K-8 school in Beaverton , some of the younger children would call me the president of the school , rather than the principal . How wise are young children ? The word president literally means
BOOK “ to sit before ,” “ to act as head or chief ,” “ chosen leader of a body of persons .” In the April CWGA Villager article entitled Great Organization Have Great Leaders , I shared some aspects of leadership that have guided me through my career and are exhibited by the current presidents of CWGA . While I did not experience the leadership of past presidents , I believe that we would not be 130-members strong and , on our way to becoming this area ’ s premier women ’ s golf club without the leadership of presidents during the last 49 years .
In my April article I wrote that great leaders have a “ shared vision that seeks to improve an organization while honoring the work that occurred in the past .” They recognize “ the strengths and weaknesses of themselves and others so that they can recruit members to help carry out the vision .” I chose these two quotes from that article because recognizing and honoring 50 years of CWGA leaders this month exemplifies these points . At the July 7 Ooh La La Scramble luncheon , Vice Presidents Amy Day and Carol Riley continued the 50th Anniversary celebration by honoring 50 years of CWGA presidents . Of the 50 past presidents listed , 12 of these presidents are still members of CWGA . Together these 12 women not only served as presidents , but collectively held 169 other positions in the organization ! Terry Borst , a 2021 co-president with Laurie Bales , was the organizer and host of the Scramble and luncheon . Dressed in pink , black , white and sparkles , 69 CWGA members played in a fabulous four-person scramble . Laurie and Terry collectively held 15 other positions in CWGA . They are former authors of Villager articles and current chairs of the social committee , just two examples of this fact . Sue Oberg , CWGA president in 2006 , has been a member of CWGA for 25 years and has held 48 different positions . Sue still contributes as one of the leaders of communications and the website . Many of the 12 past presidents still currently lead and serve CWGA on other committees . We honor and recognize our past and current presidents for “ stepping up to lead CWGA with vision , energy , persistence and a willingness to honor the past while making changes that moves CWGA on a path toward a premier women ’ s golf club !”
We are all looking forward to the August Shotgun Scramble , Dog Days of Summer which will be held at 8:30 a . m . Aug . 10 . Will the organizers play “ Who
Let the Dogs Out ”? We are not sure , but we know they put a little twist in this scramble . Golfers will only be allowed to carry and play with three clubs . Which three would you choose ? At the luncheon that day we will continue our 50th celebration with a presentation by Chris Benzel about the history of CWGA . On Sept . 7 , look for flamingos on the golf course during a Shotgun Scramble starting at 1:30 p . m .. A Flamingo Party after the scramble includes appetizers , dinner and cocktails .
Lastly , congratulations to the 2023 Champions of the Partner ’ s Tournament , Alex Carney and Susan Taylor . Results regarding the next champion of the Handicap Tournament will be published in the September issue .
