In August , the 46th World Bridge Championships were held in Marrakesh , Morocco . Top players from all over the world competed for the coveted titles and trophies in four major events – Open , Women ' s , Seniors , and Mixed . Each event started with twenty-four teams . After a thirteen-day period , the four winning teams were announced and celebrated in an awards ceremony !
David Lindop competed for Canada . As a member of the press , I was able to observe the latest world class approaches to the game .
One noticeable trend is the way preemptive bidding is used . The general guideline is to have a good suit when making a preemptive bid . Since the game has become much more competitive , players have adapted and become more aggressive with a preemptive opening when their side is not vulnerable and the opponents are vulnerable . We encourage you to consider this new philosophy .
On that same subject , in The Real Deal in this issue , Larry Cohen discusses a hand submitted by many-time world champion Peter Weichsel from this tournament . Larry gives his opinion on what to open when you have a six-card suit headed by the ace but , otherwise , not a good suit . Since Peter wanted Larry to discuss this actual deal , Larry has referred to the article as the “ Real ” Real Deal .
Better Bridge has a social media presence now . We ’ re on Instagram under “ itsAudreyGrant ” ( since there are others with the same name ). We want to stay connected with you and share current bridge information . For example , we posted the hand and Larry ' s article from The Real Deal . Readers commented on that hand , giving their opinion .
Also on social media , we shared an excerpt from Zia Mahmood ’ s hot-off-the-press book . In case you missed the editorial in the ACBL Bridge Bulletin by Paul Linxwiler about the new convention card , we posted that the ACBL agrees either the updated or the traditional convention card can be used . Better Bridge prefers the original , and you can use the Grant Standard Card which corresponds with ACBL Standard . The video with the description is in the Resource Center on the Better Bridge website .
In November , there will be a Better Bridge Teacher Accreditation Program online . All of us benefit when there are hundreds of trained teachers using material that is engaging and up-to-date . We want to see interest and membership in bridge organizations grow and thrive . We hope you ' ll become involved .
