Lylli

The London singer/songwriter is a wonder, every thing she touches being turned into a work of art through her sweet and husky voice. She is said to be ‘fascinated by the beautiful impermanence of life’. With her latest work with ENIGMA Dubz on the ‘And I’m Gone’ EP, we were able to delve into Lylli’s mind…

Tell us about yourself and how you got into music.

I’m a London based singer, illustrator and animation producer. Basically I’m really greedy and want to do anything and everything creative. Obviously that’s not possible… so at the moment I’ve narrowed it down to these three. Ever since I can remember I’ve been obsessed with music, you won’t find me anywhere without earphones or a speaker nearby. I used to play clarinet when I was younger and sung in the school jazz band! But I really only picked it up more seriously around five years ago whilst staying in Melbourne. I was lucky to meet some amazing musicians out there and we spent time in the studio experimenting and recording all sorts of different crazy stuff! From that moment I knew making music had to be a big part of my life.

What are ideas behind ‘And I’m Gone’, and how did the collaboration with ENIGMA Dubz come about?

The idea first stemmed from hearing about a friend’s relationship break down over her partner’s jealous behaviour. It eventually pushed her away from him, bravely realising that she was happier on her own and free, rather than with him and his possessive ways. It was a sad but empowering move for her.

Slime Recordings got in touch after hearing a track I worked on with Nemea, and introduced me to James (Enigma Dubz). He gave me total freedom to go where I wanted with the vocals and was so easy to work with.

You love to share your friends work (which is so nice and we love that) so, can you tell about a few people who we should all be listening to right now?

Menik is an old friend and super talented composer and producer, this year he released his debut album which was over five years in the making! It’s a sort of audio biography of his most meaningful life experiences so far, some of the recordings are over 28 years old! It has a really beautiful nostalgic feel.

O’Flynn has also just released his debut album. You can’t sit still to those afro disco beats! So many great intricate sounds and samples to indulge in, and who can resist anything involving a harp…

What tips and advice do you have for aspiring singers?
