The ‘Don't Speak’ EP by SynEater is a clever clash of soft and hard. Contrasting emotions, sweetness of love yet laying down the rules in a harsh manner. First track ‘If’ eases in with a soft voice, the gritty bass pushes its way through rebelliously. If you could be my sweetheart, I will love you. Light notes play in while the vocals are chopped and diced. The title track has a lovely oldschool-style melody, this time the dark side comes from a playful, wobbly bit of bass whilst the vocal is moody. The trio is complete with ‘Long Time’, the pace is softened and there is an intriguing experimental mood with the jarring sound and the reaching vocal. Took a long time to get here, but we’re here now baby.
Downplay is proud to welcome American producer SynEater to the label for his debut release on the imprint. ‘If’ rolls straight out the gate with a descending chord pattern mixed with seductive diva vocals deployed over warped basslines and a skipping 4x4 groove, absolutely precision-tooled to get the dance jumping. ‘Don’t Speak’ takes a more laidback approach, with jazzy keys and a heavily percussive 2-step rhythm backing a monster bassline that underpins the track’s dynamism. ‘Long Time’ follows a similar path, but switches it up with intricate beatwork and sub-bass strapped to a soulful female vocal for a delicious ride to the darkside.
