An Introduction To Mac Miller

After the passing from apparent drug overdose at his studio city home In California in September of Pittsburgh born and raised rapper, artist and producer Mac Miller, it seems fitting to say a few words about him. As a relatively late starter to Mac Miller, I’ll admit I only became aware of Mac's work after the release of the excellent laid-back groovy track ‘Dang’ featuring Anderson.Paak. I soon realised this young 20-something year old white rapper had a lot more about him than just rapping. Producing under the name Larry Fisherman amongst other pseudonyms, real name Malcolm McCormick could play bass, lead guitar and drums. He was an excellent keyboardist, produced his own beats and sang, all by his early twenties.

In 2010, he signed a record deal with Pittsburgh-based indie record label Rostrum Records and released his debut album ‘Blue Slide Park’ which was released on November 8, 2011. In July 2011 the title was announced, having been named after a section of Frick Park (which is known as Blue Slide Park) in Pittsburgh. The park section is at the corner of Beechwood Blvd and Nicholson Street which is just two blocks from Taylor Allderdice High School where Miller attended, and was his childhood hang out.

Many people in Europe only really knew Mac Miller from dating Ariana Grande but had he not passed on 6th September 2018, with his ever constantly evolving music style, Mac Miller could do it all. And, I’m sure he would have undoubtedly gone on to be a massive worldwide artist having already achieved house-hold name status in the USA. But, unfortunately it seems Mac Miller finally lost his battle with drugs, depression and demons which he talked openly about in many interviews. Even with all his problems, it did not stop Mac releasing five studio albums before his untimely death at the age of just 26. He has since received countless tributes from other artists in his field including Travis Scott, Childish Gambino, Kendrick Lamar, Macklemore, Maroon 5, Elton John and many more.

I’ve personally been producing and realising many records since 1991 and I’m astonished how much Mac Miller learned and contributed to the music world by his mid 20’s. A true talent and engaging character that will be sorely missed.

Who says a white guy can't have soul?

RIP Malcolm Mccormick, 19 January 1992 - 7 September 2018
