TOUGH LOVE
The rising British duo are taking the House scene by storm. They have gained chart success with 'So Freakin' Tight' and, most recenty, 'Pony'. Cessle caught up with Stefan (one half of Tough Love) to chat music.
House and Techno music, that's the kind of bracket that you come from.. How do you feel to this?
We come from a mulititude of genres, originaly grew up making house & garage music. Me and Alex joined forces in end of 2011, just before the whole deep house scene kicked off. Found a new love for the sound, I think a lot of people that went through the House scene realised that it was dying, it wasn't that much fun, wasn't that great to be a part of and all of a sudden this whole surgence of what everyone called 'Deep House' just came outta nowhere and found a new love for it. And you just went back in, started making some House again, just playing it and pushing it.
Derrick Carter said it's not actually Deep House, his word is Derp House.
The thing is it's frustrating for us as a lot of people try to categorise House music. Let's all be honest, it's just House music. Whether or not it's got a different synth of a different sound, it all falls under a dance umbrella, it's House music. People want to take pockets and they want to segregate it because they seem to think it's cool or they seem to think it's a whole new movement. It's all house music at the end of the day.
Let's just call it Derp House - we both agree that it's not actually Deep House. If you had to put it into a bracket, would you think it's more going into bassline?
Some of it is more angled towards Bassline, I think that's where the problem is. It's the sounds that are being used, some are a lot more musical than the other records. We as Tough Love have some bassy material and some soulful material. So, it's very hard to say this is the sound that you are, this is the sound that you play.
The new track is a quality track, I appreciate quality.
At the end of the day, music is music. It might not be to everyone's tastes, at the same time the tracks do what they do. A lot of people don't realise that 'Pony', 'So Freakin Tight' and a few of the other records, they've been on the circuit for 2 years way before they came out on radio, before people have highlighted it. They've gone from an underground level to now crossover 2 years later, but people seem to think they've just come out now, but they haven't - it's been a long journey to where they've got to. Anyone that knows and followed us from early, they know our sets always vary. It depends
