Snow Plow Ride-Along Program Returns; A Note from DPW About Snow Removal This Winter By Jeanetta Miller Snow, ice and cold are already here! The Department of Public Works has been very busy preparing to keep the streets plowed and cleared of snow and ice during the winter months. The City begins to salt and plow major roads as soon as snow starts to accumulate. Hills, curves, intersections and school entry roads are a priority when there is any snowfall that causes slippery conditions. The City begins plowing residential streets once major and local roads are complete. This operation can vary in time and take up to 24 hours. It is the DPW’s goal to clear all City streets within 12 hours of the conclusion of a snow/ice storm. Again this year, the City will treat major intersections and city bridge decks with an anti-icing application prior to a winter storm event. This is where a liquid product is spray-applied up to 24 hours before a storm. The anti-icing solution is highly effective in preventing the bond of snow and ice to the pavement.
