When we see Major Arcana Six as a card related to Air we understand the most important aspects of managing relationships: good decision-making, integrity, trust and communication.
Love relationships all tend to begin with watery emotions and fiery passions. If those elements weren't present the relationship wouldn't begin in the first place.
But to keep a relationship together and keep it balanced and integrated, the element of Air is essential. It doesn't matter how you feel or how much passion you have if you simply haven't chosen the right person or made the right decisions within the relationship. If both partners can't act with integrity the relationship will fall apart. Where there is no trust love cannot be sustained. When two people cannot communicate with each other there is no possibility for a future.
Locked within the esoteric associations of Major Arcana Six, the Lovers, are the keys to understanding how love relationships actually work. It's funny to think that we marry for love (Water) or attraction (Fire) or even money (Earth). But to keep the relationship together, what we need is Air.
