Creating sacred space prior to a reading should be de rigueur for every reader. Each reader has his or her own method of doing this, based on spiritual traditions and what works for the individual. A simple prayer, the lighting of a candle, the presence of a reading cloth, crystals or sacred objects is often enough to create sacred space appropriate for tarot reading. Some readers prefer a more elaborate ritual, such as casting a circle or invoking the Four Elements.
For me, meditative breathing and raising energy is necessary. I say a quiet prayer asking to be an open conduit. I address the spirit world around me, commanding that only those spirits who are able to be helpful are welcome - the rest will find no quarter. When preparing to communicate with the spirit world this is especially important. Playful spirits could be disruptive to the process. Creating a sacred space where only helpful entities are welcome is a matter of protection.
If you are reading for someone who wants to connect with a deceased friend or relative it is often helpful to start your reading by consulting the cards on what that person was like when he or she was alive. This helps you tune into the energy of that person, and helps you to understand the relationship between your client and the deceased. This step also helps to relax your client and attune your client to the spirit's energy.
