When we try using willpower toward setting goals and changing our lives, we can hear some of these things people have told us over and over as a still small voice. Sometimes that voice isn’t small and quiet at all.

Let’s talk about Affirmations and positive thinking. These can work wonders in our lives but if we’ve experienced years of worrying about money and we start affirming that we have enough money in our checking account to pay our bills but we really don’t, someplace in our mind something feels uncomfortable. We have a niggling feeling that it’s not true, and then we’re lying to ourselves. Canadian researcher, Dr. Joanne Wood at the University of Waterloo and her colleagues at the University of New Brunswick who have recently published their research in the Journal of Psychological Science, concluded "repeating positive self-statements may benefit certain people, such as individuals with high self-esteem, but backfire for the very people who need them the most." She goes on to say that “People who view themselves as unlovable, for example, find that saying that are so unbelievable that it strengthens their own negative view rather than reversing it.”

So how can we change the writings on our walls? There are many ways. Some will work better than others depending on your beliefs, your needs.
