Review: The Seasons of Cherokee’s Life - A Canine’s Final Reflections
A Book by Sandra Y. Roberts
The book is told through the voice, heart, and the lens of Cherokee, a charming Shih Tzu, and takes us on a journey from his days in the puppy mill to the pet shop and into the home of his mistress, Alicia and her family. Cherokee chronicles his life with Alicia through her joys and challenges and ultimate transformation into the independent woman who he knew she would become. Along the way he shares his place in this journey.
In the beginning of the book, Cherokee tells us about how dogs process information, how they can communicate their needs, and how they can help us in life. I loved his description: “We are not driven by ego, so we do not know how to be, say, self-serving or disingenuous. We are steadfast in our loyalty, love unconditionally, do not judge or hold grudges, and can be counted on to be there for you. And our intuition allows us to read humans better than you can read each other.” These qualities should be an example for people to learn and practice in life; a gift from our Canine friends.
