The Moon is Always Female

The Moon is arguably the most controversial card in the tarot deck. Some see it as a card of spirituality, intuition and magick. Others see it as a warning of treachery and hidden enemies. Still others see it as a card of lunacy.

The word "confusion" is a key word for the Moon. That makes sense since the card itself is so confusing!

I believe that such a variety of interpretations exist for this card because the moon itself has always been a symbol of the feminine mysteries. The moon is central in the practice of witchcraft.

In earlier days the patriarchy might have seen witchcraft as treacherous or dangerous. Today, we are more likely to view feminine magick, and the moon itself, in a more positive way.

As the eighteenth card in the Major Arcana the Moon falls in the final section of seven. I view the final seven cards as the journey toward spiritual enlightenment. Each of these cards gives us a lesson for our own spiritual growth. So for me the Moon is an inherently spiritual card.

When we walk in the moonlight (as the path often seen on this card begs us to do) we know that nothing is as it appears. In the moonlight it is hard to discern what is real and what is simply a shadow.

The Moon tells me to use intuition to discover what is true and what is not. It directs me to push past confusion and illusion to find my spiritual reality. I must enlist the help of Spirit on the journey, for now I am traveling into the greatest depths of the subconscious. I am venturing into the place of mystery and of magick.
