TO REVIEW THIS SESSION, CIRCLE THE INCORRECT USE OF: COLONS, SEMI-COLONS &
COMMAS. [DISCUSSION/CHECK ON WEBINAR]
The learning object was an image of the green ‘walking’ man from traffic lights. In discussion
with peers, students were asked: to consider the social scientific questions of interest posed
by the image; via database keyword searches to locate potentially, relevant sources for a
scholarly discussion of the issue they identify; to evaluate the sources, on the basis of Bricks’
(2011) reliability test. I had provided example responses for each aspect of the task on our
shared Google Doc, the group generated a range of very relevant responses ranging from:
feminist critiques of gendered public representations of active males in contrast to passive
females (eg; special seats for mothers and children; elderly) and comments on how social
control in contemporary society is implemented and maintained. A supplementary teaching
objective was to reinforce student’s research skills; which they had recently acquired in a
Library session as well as the ability to discern/evaluate academically, reliable sources’ of
information.
