Summary
The previous exercises are mainly intended to introduce you to the programme. The first
important point to remember is that the function or purpose of a text will influence its
structure and its language. The sample text is a general welcome to prospective students in
the Faculty of Arts. Therefore, its language is less formal and there is less of a requirement
for evidence to support the claims being made. Academic texts, as we shall see, are very
