A Step in Time : A Feasibility Study of a Mobile App for Measuring Mobility after Massage

Would you like to be part of a trial to help build the evidence for massage therapy for people with chronic osteoarthritis ?

We are looking for people over 18 years with chronic osteoarthritis in any joint to join our 5- week trial . During the trial you will receive your usual massage treatments , walk for at least 10 minutes at least three times a week along the same route for the duration of the trial . You will also be shown how to use MapMyWalk on your smartphone to record your walks .

Data analysis The focus group discussions provided forums for practitioners to share their experiences of participating in the research . This added further insights to the feasibility of this type of study among massage practitioners . Practitioners expressed that they found it easy and enjoyable to participate in the trial , despite COVID-19 pandemic restrictions on travel and practice , and looked forward to learning even more about how research works .

The data collected using the app provided basic information such as whether or not walking speed increased , decreased or remained unchanged over time for each individual . The screenshots provided data in quite static format , which did not enable quality checking or verification of data collected . These limitations occurred because the

researchers did not own the data collected . Approaches were made to the app developers to gain access to the data , but these attempts were not successful . In future studies , researchers should consider partnering with an app company with part of the deal being to have access to the data collected , or to develop a customised , purpose-built app which sends all data directly to the researchers . Either way , it is imperative for researchers to have access to the raw data so that the data analysis can be independently checked , verified and analysed .
