Herbal farming and manufacturing update
by Warren Morey | Herbalist and Manager of the Pharmaceutical Plant Company
Like so many other industries , herbal medicine manufacturers are struggling with ongoing supply of herbs . This week we received California Poppy and Lime Flowers , both were sourced out of Ukraine and left prior to the outbreak of the war . It may be many years before Ukraine can get back to being a major agricultural producer . The war is also effecting supply out of neighbouring countries like Poland , Latvia and Romania .
Organic Skullcap arrived from the USA and cloves and wormwood arrived for the next batch of Triplex .
This week we are fermenting Paw Paw , mostly sold into the cosmetic market . It starts with a yeast fermentation . And next week we start the lactic acid fermentation with acidophilus . Siberian Ginseng and St Mary ’ s Thistle were coming through the percolators .
Farming update
It ’ s the time of year to harvest the root crops . Astragalus , Burdock , dandelion , Valerian and Withania to name a few . It ’ s hard work and with the red vulcanic soil at Marleen Herbs , extra effort is required to clean all the soil off . Ronald also grows a big crop of Fennel seed and that was harvested this week .
It ’ s 2 years since I have been able to visit Tasmania , so I ’ m looking forward to an upcoming trip . There is not so much to look at but this quieter time allows for planning of the 22 / 23 season .
