If insidious tension creates supersensitivity and pain in muscles , fascia and joints in a state of super sensitivity and causes fatigue , would it be plausible to expect that some or all the internal organs would be in a similar state of tension strain and fatigue ? As we know , the nervous system and fascia are deeply connected throughout the entire organism . Therefore , as remedial massage therapists we need to focus on releasing these tensions . In my experience , this can be achieved through weekly remedial massage accompanied by instruction on breathing through the remedial process . All clients will be different and tailored observation of a particular client , communication and reassurances are essential . To me , 22-year-olds should not have had to suffer from insidious tension , yet some do . My
observations of these young clients are as follows : they have less body muscle and tendon strength , reduced stamina , low muscle tone , loose and or weak joints , are shallow breathers with low lung capacity , are sensitive to touch , injure and fatigue easily , have low pain tolerances , have been and often are still using prescribed medicines , and suffer from underlying digestion problems and / or food allergies . This type of insidious tension in young clients appears to be on the rise . My aim is to raise awareness of them and of the capacity of remedial massage therapy to help . How you communicate with , observe and treat these clients may differ from your treatment of more mature clients , and naturally there are also individual differences among younger clients . In addition to insidious muscle tension , their mental attitude can be affected ,
undermining their confidence in their work , relationships and social arenas . Approach these clients slowly at first , observing , listening , stretching their muscles . Get them breathing . Let them rest when necessary , slowly but surely applying and increasing pressure . It is a slow process but , in the end , a valuable one . Explain what you are doing to your client – young clients tend to be curious , and it is their body , and they do need to learn about it . Building trust and confidence in this client , as with all clients , is valuable . As positive results present themselves over the weeks the client will recognise the changes and will breathe better as you move deeper into the body ' s tissue , nerves and fascia . Eventually when you feel they are ready , you can talk to them about their thoughts on fitness and training and other ways they can self-manage their tension .
