studies involving 448 patients were located . No adverse events were reported . The authors concluded that Tui Na alone or Tui Na with cervical traction may be helpful for people experiencing cervical radiculopathy . However , only very low quality or low quality evidence was available to support the results .
• A more recent systematic review in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reivews 12 reviewed studies investigating interventions for the prevention of mastitis after childbirth . The authors found some evidence that acupoint massage is probably better than routine care . Breast massage and low frequency pulse treatment may be better than routine care for preventing mastitis . It is important to note here that specialist qualifications are required for lymphatic and other massage of the breast ( see ATMS Lymphatic Drainage Massage Policy ).
Such studies are promising but are often limited by the quality of the research . High quality studies are called for to strengthen the evidence-base of massage therapy in many areas , including the use of massage to manage mental health conditions . An overview of current research into the effectiveness of massage therapy for a range of mental health conditions is provided below .
Evidence for the role of massage therapy in mental health
There is a growing acknowledgement of the number of Australians with mental health issues . It is estimated that more than 1 in 5 Australians aged 16-85 years have experienced a mental disorder in the past 12 months . 13 About 17 % experienced anxiety disorder , 8 % an affective ( mood ) disorder and 3 % a substance use disorder . Given this prevalence in the population , a range of healthcare services are required to provide accessible , safe and effective treatment .
Many people seek massage therapy for its relaxation effect and for pain relief . 4 Dr Tiffany Field , Touch Research Institute , University of Miami Medical School , noted : ‘ Massage therapy has been noted to relax the nervous system by slowing heart rate and blood pressure . Stress and pain hormones are also decreased by massage , reducing pain and enhancing immune function .’ 5 High quality evidence is required to support the role of massage therapists in multidisciplinary healthcare teams to manage people with mental health issues in our communities .
Table 1 summarises some of the recent studies on the effectiveness of massage therapy in treating people experiencing mental health issues . Systematic reviews and meta-analysis are considered higher quality evidence than randomised controlled trials . Qualitative research which lacks generalisability is considered lower quality evidence .
