that this is the same target of the fastacting antidepressant ketamine , an NMDAR antagonist . 87 Low magnesium status has been associated with increased depression . 88 A magnesium deficiency leads to dysregulation in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal ( HPA ) axis , which is well known to be involved in the pathogenesis of depression and anxiety . 87 As magnesium deficiency worsens , numbness , tingling , muscle contractions , cramps , seizures , sudden changes in behaviour ( caused by excessive or altered electrical activity in the brain ), personality changes , abnormal heart beat , and coronary spasms might occur . 89
Zinc Lower serum zinc levels have been reported among people diagnosed with depression than among healthy volunteers . 18 Zinc is one of the most prevalent and essential minerals involved
18 , 90 in optimal function of the brain and nerves . 18 Neurons containing free ionic zinc ( i . e ., Zn2 +) are found in various areas of the brain , including the cortex , 90 amygdala , 18 , 90 olfactory bulb , 90 and hippocampus . 18 , 90 Zinc is involved in the biological activity of enzymes , proteins , and signal transcription factors . 90 It is a neuromodulator , 90 antioxidant , 42 , 91-93 92 , 93
anti-inflammatory , is involved in the maintenance of various homeostatic mechanisms , 90 and reduces oxidative stress . 42 , 92 , 93 As a neuromodulator , zinc is released during synaptic transmission and it binds to presynaptic or postsynaptic membrane receptors . 90 It acts as structural , regulatory , and catalytic cofactors for a variety of enzymes , such as DNA and RNA polymerases , histone deacetylases , and DNA ligases . 90 Zinc is important for cell growth , regulation of cell proliferation , 90 hormonal regulation of cell division , 90 regulation of signal transduction , 90 regulation of cell signalling , 93 and intracellular signalling , 90 provides structural stability to cell membranes , 93 42 , 90
neurogenesis , and neurotransmission , 42 , 90 and is a regulator of synaptic activity and neuronal plasticity , 42 neurophysiology , 90 gene transcription , 90 91 , 93
gene expression , and genomic stability . 90 , 93 Zinc also plays critical roles in neuronal proliferation and differentiation , neuronal migration , and axonal growth during neurodevelopment . 42 Zinc is required for the proliferation , differentiation , and death of neurons throughout the life cycle of the human brain . 42
Probiotics Probiotics have a beneficial role in improving mental health . 47 The gut microbiome profile of people with depression is distinctly different from that of healthy people . 47 Modulating the gut microbiota in people with depression or anxiety may be beneficial

Biome Lift™ Probiotic

A clinically-trialled and condition-specific probiotic targeting the gut-brain axis
Biome Lift™ contains a clinically-trialled combination of four probiotic strains :
Lactobacillus plantarum LP01 ( LMG P-21021 ) Lactobacillus rhamnosus LR06 ( DSM 21981 ) Bifidobacterium longum 04 ( DSM 23233 )
This Lactobacillus advertisement fermentum LF16 ( DSM is available 26956 ) only to ATMS Accredited Members in accordance with the Therapeutic Goods Advertising Code .
In a randomised , double-blind , placebo-controlled study , 38 healthy participants supplemented the combination of probiotic strains found in Biome LiftTM Probiotic or placebo for 6 weeks and were assessed for changes in mood , personality dimensions and sleep quality . Significant improvements for the participants in the probiotic group were found for several subscale scores after 6 weeks , including low mood , anger-hostility , fatigue and sleep quality , with many of these improvements persisting for 3 weeks after ceasing supplementation 1 .
