Herbal farming and manufacturing update

by Warren Morey | Herbalist and Manager of the Pharmaceutical Plant Company
PPC Herbs loves to work with institutions educating new Naturopaths and Herbalists .
Recently , I hosted a visit by the students at Torrens University ( formally The Southern School of Natural Medicine ). PPC provided a complete overview of the manufacturing process from receipt of starting materials to the final Release for Supply .
After learning the fundamentals , we toured through the warehouse and viewed the manufacturing process through the extensive windows of PPC ’ s facility here in Croydon , Victoria . They were excited to see herb being loaded into the percolator cannisters , understand the technical elements of Australia ’ s newest TGA licenced manufacturing facility , and see shelves full of finished product ready to dispatch to customers .
Many were keen to explore opportunities for employment with PPC , but these are limited , as to date PPC has almost no staff turnover . The people that were here 10 years ago are still with us today . We believe that ’ s a vote of confidence is the safe and inclusive workplace PPC strives to maintain . Of course , our team does continue to grow , and we hope they also enjoy long careers here .
If your Institution , Association or Network Group would like an introduction to Herbal Manufacturing at PPC , I am happy to assist . The presentation can be done on Teams or Zoom . It ’ s a great way to get further insight into where and how your medicines are made .
Farming
In Tasmania , Ronald and Marleen have been spared the worst of the heavy rains . Marleen Herbs is on rolling hills of well drained , red volcanic soil and not subject to flooding risk . The cooler start to the year will see the crops running 2-3 weeks behind a normal season but we expect bumper crops . The usual challenge in a good year like this is weed control , when the soil is damp , cultivation is less effective is controlling the weeds .
Some of the first crops of the season are Oats Green , Elder flower , Alfalfa , Chick Weed , Nettle , Red Clover and Yarrow .
