is to fast for 12 hours overnight . This is modified if you have specific genetic markers for Alzheimers , such as the APO4e gene , to recommend a fast of up to 16 hours . The rationale for fasting is that this allows autophagy , a process which removes old damaged cells . To date the research on autophagy and fasting has been conducted in mouse models , but it is showing evidence of longer life spans as well as improved insulin sensitivity . 7
The Wahls 4 protocol , with its focus on ‘ flooding the body ’ with nutrition , emphasises adequate protein as well as up to nine cups a day of fruit and vegetables . This , combined with the elimination of gluten , sugar and dairy , will improve blood sugar regulation . The underlying strategy is to ensure that with a high level of satiety , cravings will be reduced . A review of the Wahls protocol with US healthy eating guidelines showed by comparison that the Wahls protocol contained lower added sugar and a lower glycemic index . 8
Addressing Nutrient Deficiencies
The three protocols all address nutrient deficiencies relating to a standard Western diet . Wahls recommends a high intake of fruit and vegetables ; Swanks focuses on the level of unsaturated fats to support membrane health ; and Bredesen ’ s ReCode Protocol recommends a whole food , plant based diet with small amounts of animal protein and reasonable amounts of good quality plant based fats , such as coconut
