Protocol for Building CCS Varsity Teams
In recent years , non-varsity sports teams at Cornerstone have included Upper Elementary Spring Soccer ( Gr . 3-5 ) and Middle School Soccer ( Gr . 6-8 ). Both teams have participated in the Catholic Schools and Christian Academy Soccer League ( CSCA ).
Junior Varsity Sports Teams Junior Varsity ( JV ) sports teams typically have a shorter season than a varsity team with fewer practices and games scheduled . The primary purpose of a JV team is to prepare students for the Varsity program . Coaches will focus on skill acquisition and experience . However , play time may be determined based on effort and skill , and play time in every game is not to be expected at this level . JV athletes will complete the Athletics Participation Packet , including a pay-to-play fee , and are subject to the Academic Probation policy outlined in the Parent-Student Handbook . These sports teams are eligible for the Homeschool Partnership Program .
Varsity Sports Teams Varsity teams are the highest and most formal level of competition at Cornerstone . The varsity teams will have a strong competition schedule and typically participate in local leagues . These are the only teams permitted to participate in overnight trips for tournaments and competitions . Varsity teams are the only teams eligible for receiving high school credit and are subject to the Academic Probation policy outlined in the Parent-Student Handbook . Participation in these sports requires a fully completed Athletic Participation Packet , including all training , medical authorization , and pay-to-play fees . These sports teams are eligible for the Homeschool Partnership Program .
This is the most highly organized and intense level of high school sport . Athletes are expected to practice and play at an intensity not found in elementary , middle school or Junior Varsity athletics . Varsity athletes must have enough physical strength , game knowledge , and skill to be able to manage strenuous practices and difficult game situations . Student-athletes who play on a varsity team are expected to work hard all of the time , to avoid absences from practices and competitions , and to show a desire to grow as an athlete .
Varsity teams may practice up to four or five days per week and typically play two ( sometimes three if there are scheduling difficulties ) games per week .
• Varsity teams may have some Saturday games on their schedule . Varsity teams may attend tournaments that require an overnight stay .
• All athletes who play at the varsity level are expected to participate in these tournaments . The cost of lodging and food for overnight tournaments is the responsibility of the players .
At the start of each season , practice and game schedules will be published and posted on the school ’ s Google Calendar which is available on the school ’ s website as well as the school ’ s app .
Cornerstone ’ s typical fall sport is Varsity Soccer ( Co-Ed , Gr . 8-12 ). In the winter , Cornerstone typically offers Varsity Girls ’ Basketball ( Gr . 8-12 ) and Varsity Boys ’ Basketball ( Gr . 8-12 ).
