ST. PAULI THEATER GALA

by Becky Tan
The St. Pauli Theater kicked off its new season with a gala on September 8. Ten previews of upcoming presentations were shown to give us an idea of what to expect. All wonderful, of course. We saw parts of the musical Cabaret and a St. Pauli version of Carmen, as well as the Dreigroschenoper— which isn’ t an opera but more of a musical, with twenty-two songs. There was standup comedy, as well as readings from books, and a solo piano presentation by Franz Wattenbrink. Katja Riemann spoke sections of Di * V * I * S * O * N, a play directed by her daughter, Paula Romy. Arnulf Rating, a stand-up comedian( cabaret) showed us footage of Donald Trump to support his jokes. And then there is
Großstadtrevier, a TV series that features a typical working day for the police in St. Pauli.
The St. Pauli Theater is located on Hamburg’ s Reeperbahn at Spielbudenplatz 29-30. It was founded 180 years ago and has gone under various names, such as Urania, Actien, Variete, and Warmtee, showing over 65,000 shows to 32 million guests in its 533 seats. It is the oldest independent theater in Hamburg, and probably even in all of Germany. In 2003, Thomas Colien and Ulrich Walter took over and are happy to entertain us with about fifty different presentations over the next months, including special ones in summer 2026. Although some of the songs are in English, be prepared to practice your German.
The program and tickets are available in several sectors, but definitely under www. st. pauli. theater. de as well as info @ st-paulitheater. de.
