The Associated Students of the Universtiy of New Mexico have identified capital outlay opportunities, including the proposed "Lobo Plaza," which would bring much needed community and aesthetic improvements to the Science, Engineering and Psychology areas of main campus.

The November 2014 elections resulted in a victory for the University of New Mexico. General Obligation Bonds B and C were approved by New Mexico voters resulting in over $20 million being dedicated to the University to see improvements in UNM Libraries and a much needed overhaul to the Farris Engineering Building. As was said in our previous magazine; “very seldom does change come without the support of the many.” The overwhelming support for this university by New Mexico voters reaffirms our posture as New Mexico’s Flagship University. However, the promise of newness left much to be desired contrasting heavily with the outdated worn plaza, which sits abandoned and idle next to the Farris Engineering building. ASUNM recognized this issue needed to be addressed with haste. Any student, who has been in the area, knows of the loose concrete tiling, which often creates a trip hazard at any pace. It was noted that ADA accessible ramps were few and in-between, however, even the existing ramps proved too narrow and too steep. With many capital outlay and infrastructure projects being developed and considered by the University, ASUNM made it a priority that the New Mexico State Legislature seriously considers this project. At the urging of countless students, especially in the engineering department, over $130K was requested for the project, which would see a new community space developed on the site, as well as the development of ADA compliant access to and through the new plaza. This facelift would provide many opportunities for students, as this new area has the potential to be a new hub of student activity, just steps away from Hodgin Hall, the first building at the U. This Legislative Session, you’ve made sure that YOUR voice was heard. You asked and we listened. This is why we continue to be the best university in the Southwest! Imagine how much more we can accomplish!
