ROCKS
The Mountain Home Rocks project has hit ASUMH in a big way. Thirty-three-year-old nursing student Eric Holowell
brought the nationwide phenomenon to the Twin Lakes Area in August. His first rock was found on the campus at Roller
Hall with the simple message, “Don’t Give Up.” Holowell found out about the Kindness Rock Project where members of
that group write kind messages on rocks.
According to the Kindness Rock Project’s website, the project’s goal is to “inspire others through randomly placed
rocks along the way.” Another goal the site stated was to “recruit every person who stumbles upon it to join in the pursuit
of inspiring others through random acts of kindness.”
For Holowell, rock painting is becoming more than just a simple game. About a week-and-a-half before classes start-
ed at Arkansas State University-Mountain Home, he painted a rock and wrote, “Don’t Give Up” on it.
He left it outside the library, he said, to hopefully inspire someone else. Holowell, who is on the registered nurse
track, said he struggled. He gave up on college once. He had back surgery and dealt with depression. “I kinda gave up,” he
said. School just started. He put “Don’t Give Up” on the rock because there are probably other people who feel the way he
did. The game expanded when Holowell contacted the marketing department at ASUMH about an #AweSUMH rock idea
where people could find a special rock and turn it in for ASUMH prizes. The project has caught on and the rock has been
found and rehidden numerous times. Thanks for bringing the #AweSUMH rock game to ASUMH, Eric!

The Friends of the Baxter County Library have
announced a new student scholarship for Non-tradi-
tional students attending Arkansas State University -
Mountain Home.
The Friends of the Baxter County Library presented a
check for $1,500 to the ASUMH Foundation to be used
to help non-traditional students in the expenses for
tuition and books. non-traditional students can usually be
defined as those that delayed entry into a post-
secondary education, attend part-time, or are responsi-
ble for their own financial aid. This is the first year that
the Friends of the Baxter County Library have given a
scholarship specific to non-traditional students.
