Since the shooting death of Sterling by Baton Rouge police , the department has worried about threats against officers . U . S . officials have long wanted a reliable way to know the identities of thousands of foreigners entering and leaving the country daily . A solution for this difficult task may be found in a recent in-field pilot study at a busy Southern California border crossing . The six-month project used biometric technology to match entry and exit records of pedestrians at the Otay Mesa crossing near San Diego . The U . S . Customs and Border Protection ( CPB ) administered the pilot , focusing on the more than 9,000 pedestrians crossing the border there daily .

The in-field portion of the project ended in May after testing the capabilities of iris and facial recognition systems to rapidly identify people moving through pedestrian lanes .
