AST : ‘ What strategies should security professionals use to engage various departments within an organization to implement an effective security plan ?’
Collaboration , which is open , consistent , inclusive , and candid , is essential to earn the trust of the various components within an organization , particularly those for whom security is not their primary mission .
Being overly proscriptive without gaining stakeholder buy-in or the opportunity to practice together routinely , may result in delayed or chaotic reactions to a real event .
There are a number of ways to build collaboration and provide realistic training to educate , empower and engage individuals throughout an organization , large or small . Corporate-level endorsement is the start but not the end of organizational involvement .
The goal is to provide security education and awareness as part of the life cycle of the organization , an employee benefit that will have an

ROI . AST : ‘ Have recent violent incidents in the workplace and in popular public venues helped to build awareness among the general public ?’
Two incidents , in particular , the December 2015 husband-and-wife team that carried out a shooting rampage against the husband ’ s fellow workers , in San Bernardino , CA , and the June 2016 shooting rampage at the Pulse Nightclub , in Orlando , FL , highlighted the fact that workplaces and popular public venues have become targets for catastrophic mass casualty attacks .
In the case of the Pulse Nightclub shooting , the owners of such clubs and their patrons are now substantially upgrading their situational awareness and protective measures against such attacks .

Signs of ideological progression along the pathway into violence by an employee , or other types of psychologically related early warning risk behaviors , are now increasingly being monitored by multidiscipline Threat Assessment Teams that are being established by companies ’ Human Resources ( HR ) and other appropriate departments , including Legal and Security .
