Kitting Out the Army

ECB recently had some surplus kit and coincidentally received a request from the British Army in Kansas , who were to play a cricket match in celebration of the Queen ’ s 90th birthday , asking for any assistance !
The following reply and photos were received :
‘ We had a brilliant day ! We arranged a Queen ’ s 90th birthday English tea on the US Army Base here at Fort Leavenworth . We had the works – Victoria sponges , scones and cream , imported tea ( US teabags are awful !) and cucumber sandwiches ! We even found a band to play the national anthem ! Then we held the commemorative cricket match ... which the UK team lost !
‘ There are only eight British families based here , around 30 “ internationals ” and 6000 Americans , so we had slim pickings for players ! My British Army officer husband is an ECB coach in the UK and has loved cricket all his life , so he was determined that while we were posted here away from our home in Wiltshire for two years he would teach the Americans what they were missing . Most hadn ' t even heard of the game and held the bat above their heads à la baseball ! Those who had heard of it certainly didn ' t know most of the Laws and Rules ! But , the 12-over match ( cut short from 20 as we were under a tornado watch !) was played in great spirits and sadly , largely thanks to the Pakistani and Australian element of the Rest of the World team , the Brits were beaten .
‘ At the end of the match we invited the players to make a donation to our chosen charities if they wanted to keep their kit , and we raised over $ 1000 to be split between Help For Heroes ( H4H ) and the Wounded Warrior Project ( the US equivalent of H4H ).
‘ Thank you so much for your support .’
