Young Officials Conference 2016
The annual Young Officials’ Conference took place on
Saturday 27th February, with a record 35 young umpires and
scorers in attendance. The day itself was a success, with a
number of engaging seminars running over the course of
the day. Sam Hollingshead, from Gloucestershire, wrote the
following report on the day…we hope all the Young Officials
who attended had a fun day!
‘The annual ECB Young Officials’ Conference took place on
the 27th February at the Home of Cricket, Lord’s. The
attendance was the highest to date, which totalled 35 young,
aspiring, umpires and scorers alike. Once all of the Young
Officials had a chance to meet and catch up with other
members, we went for a seminar on the “Who’s the Umpire?”
database and were informed that our appointments would be
given through this system.
‘Following this we had an extremely valuable session on
Ground, Weather and Light, which addressed the difficulties
and challenges involved when umpiring cricket matches
during the season ahead. This session was a good chance
for all Young Officials to consider various ways of dealing
with bad weather and how best to relay information to the
captains, players and the groundsman – this will be
