John Barclay A search of the Internet led the editorial team towards John’s impressive Wikipedia entry. We saw no need to amend… Educated at Eton, John was an acclaimed schoolboy cricketer. Honoured by The Cricket Society, he made his First Class debut for Sussex, while still at school in 1970. Barclay was an opening batsman with an excellent technique and eye who bowled off-spin, claiming the dismissals of Ian Botham and Viv Richards several times. In 1981, he became Captain of Sussex CCC, leading the team to second place in the County Championship. He was rated as one of the best county captains around and even tipped for the Test captaincy until a finger injury forced his retirement in 1986.
