Five Tips from the Top
Former England international bowler and current First Class umpire Alex Wharf shares his top five tips on how best to use the
winter to prepare for next season.
1. Laws and Regulations
With the Laws of the game changing, the study of the Laws and
regulations will be high on the agenda of all umpires this winter.
2. Health and Fitness
My personal health and fitness are very important to me.
It benefits me on-field during matches and in recovery, as the
games come thick and fast during the season.
3. Reading/Education
I'm very interested in personal development and love to read a
variety of books that will inspire and educate me. My favourite
book is Total Recall by Arnold Schwarzenegger – in his own words
‘my unbelievably true life story’.
4. Holidays/Relaxation
Spending time with my family and friends during the winter months
is important as I'm on the road throughout the summer months.
5. Match Simulation
I will spend time working on my fieldcraft by attending net
sessions, third umpire simulations, workshops, and watching lots
of match footage.
