Blue Plaque for Scoreboard Inventor
Sam Deards, 1842–1922, spent his
professional career as captain of the
local fire brigade in Harlow, Essex.
However, it is his invention of the cricket
scoreboard on the side for which he is
best remembered – a feat which has
earned him a historic blue plaque above
his former home.
His invention is now commonplace
around the world at every cricket
ground, from village greens to
international arenas.
Deards could never have imagined
his invention would go global.

Ground Scorebox.
