The new Play-Cricket Scorer app developed by ECB has, for the first time, made the standard Duckworth Lewis( DL) method of calculating revised targets more accessible than ever. This is great news for recreational cricket, especially where matches are taking place without any appointed or accredited officials.
What ' s the Difference?
Standard DL and Duckworth Lewis Stern( formerly known as the Professional Edition, now called DLS) produce fairly similar par scores, although DLS will generally produce a slightly higher required total to win the game.
For example, in the memorable 2015 ODI series between England and New Zealand – where England first exceeded 400 in an ODI and also chased 349 in the third game – two of the matches were interrupted by rain. In the first of these games, at the Oval, England, chasing 399, were 338-7 after 43.5 overs when rain caused a delay. When play resumed, their innings had been reduced to 46 overs. England were set 379 as their target by DLS, ending on 365-9. Under the standard formula( DL) their target would have been 369.
In the final match of the series at Durham, New Zealand totalled 283-9. Rain came and England were left with 25 overs to score 192( which they did, off the very last ball). Under DL the target would have been 189.
The bigger differences between the two methods, and the targets they set, occur in matches where rain truncates the innings of the team batting first before they have received all the overs due to them. This is because the standard edition uses an average total( known as the G figure) to base calculations on, whereas DLS uses the data from the match being played. This is why DLS requires a computer with suitable software, whereas standard DL can be worked out using a calculator, or on paper using par score tables. The DL method is still retained by the ICC as a backup in all international matches and remains a robust and eminently fair calculation method. an instant par score guide at any stage of the match. Furthermore, the DL calculator can be used independently of the scoring app, as well as part of the scoring app itself.
League Cricket
Different leagues around the UK have different solutions to rain affected matches – some use DLS in one format, others use older methods such as average run rate. With DLS software now more widely available, and the advent of the DL app on Play-Cricket Scorer, it has never been easier to access this most well-known of calculation formulas. The excuse commonly heard – ' it ' s too complicated for Club Scorers to work out and for club players to understand ' – now no longer stands! The biggest challenge for clubs will be the display of relevant par score information on their scoreboards, but with some thought, it can be done.
Leagues where the ' winning draw '( or variation of) exists can also benefit from using DL or DLS without having to introduce win / lose cricket throughout. Where rain interrupts a game, the side batting second can be set an appropriately adjusted target but still have the option of batting out for a draw. This would be infinitely preferable to the situation where sides can lose overs but not have their target reduced, for example, and is an important consideration in encouraging strong participation levels.
Which Version of DL to Use?
It would be for each league( ie the club reps and executive committees) to decide, but with the range of options now available, DL or DLS is a perfectly viable proposition. See for yourself by downloading the Play-Cricket Scorer app for free from Google Play or the App Store.
