Dr Phatho Cele-Zondi Chief Executive Officer Sports Science Institute of South Africa Understanding Accountability in Leadership Dr Zondi is a Sports and Exercise Medicine (SEM) Physician experienced in clinical sports medicine, general management, and leadership. In June 2016, Dr Zondi was appointed as CEO of the Sports Science Institute of South Africa. Dr Zondi is the President for the South African Sports Medicine Association (an NGO), and 4th Vice President for the African Union of Sports Medicine. She is the Chief Medical Officer for the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), and currently serves on the South African Institute for Drug Free Sports (SAIDS) Appeal Board. Dr Zondi is involved in postgraduate and corporate training, contributes to sports medicine columns in various magazines, and has co-authored numerous academic publications in local and international peer reviewed journals. Clinical highlights include serving as Chief Medical Officer for Team South Africa at the 2017 World Games, 2016 Rio Paralympic Games and the 2014 Commonwealth Games, and being a medical doctor for Team SA at the 2012 London Olympic Games. Dr Zondi is involved with the World Rugby at various levels, notably as a Senior Medical Educator, and as Tournament Team Physician at the Dubai Sevens and Match Doctor at the Cape Town Sevens. She consults for SA Rugby as a Sports Physician for national teams and in local tournaments, and has also worked for SAFA as team doctor for the female national teams. She is passionate about developing and mentoring young women and future leaders of South Africa.
