Where the program sits today
The most recent eight-week Under-18 Stream 1 program wrapped up earlier in 2026. Participants received individualised postprogram reports and classification support, with the team now working to connect them into the appropriate sport pathways. An Adult Multi-Sport session attracted 36 participants across rowing, cycling, athletics, table tennis, swimming and archery, with three of those athletes invited into Stream 2.
Stream 2 itself is now operating at scale. Forty-two athletes are on Training Agreements through to 30 June- 22 female and 20 male, ranging in age from 14 to 51( average 25). Fourteen sports are represented, with swimming, athletics and cycling most populated, plus one winter athlete in alpine skiing. Three athletes are already nationally categorised at Emerging level, and seven have visual impairments. Recruitment is underway for a dedicated Para Unit Athletics Coach to complement existing capability.
The Para Sport Unit Swim Program is a flagship within the unit. Nine swimmers- including a strong contingent from regional Victoria- are training under Para Unit Swim Coach Alex Hirschauer across the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre and VIS, with wrap around physical therapy, nutrition, performance psychology and performance lifestyle support.
Reaching regional Victoria
A new Regional Para Project, developed jointly with Paralympics Australia and the Victorian Regional Academies of Sport( VRAS), is set to launch as a 12-month pilot in 2026.
