My Personal Reflections on
Leadership:
Over the years I have been intrigued
and fascinated by leaders such as John
Maxwell, Ken Blanchard, Andy Stanley
and Cheryl Bachelder. Their teachings
relate to “servant leadership”. I have
endeavored to serve better as a leader
in the Canadian Sport Institute Calgary
achieving results and developing people.
Over the past few years I have been
asking myself several questions:
1. Do I care deeply about growing
others – have I been communicating,
encouraging, challenging, investing in
them? Have I given them thoughtful
feedback?
2. Have I been a great listener? Listening
trumps talking.
3. Have I been accountable – have I set
crystal clear expectations, a high bar,
given permission to say “no” to less
important tasks, offered support?
4. Have I treated people with dignity
– believing everyone has strengths,
purpose and value?
5.Have I taken personal responsibility?
I have done what I said I would do, have
I owned my piece of the puzzle?
6. Have I been humble? Has my motive
been to serve and grow others?
The focus is on both people and results.
It is not possible to sustain performance
over the long term with an either/ or
approach.
The goal is to create a motivating
environment for our staff so they take
good care of our sport partners/clients.
We have endeavored to position the CSI
Calgary as a means to an end that is
broader than the bottom line – whether
that is dollars or medals.
