KwaZulu-Natal announces
support for the 1st ASPC
African Sport Forum.
The South African Province of KwaZulu-Natal has affirmed it’s
commitment to sports development in the region by announcing
their support of the 1st ASPC African Sport Forum which will be
held in Durban on the 6th and 7th of September this year. They
will be partnering with host centre and ASPC member Prime
Human Performance Institute, the South African NOC, SASCOC
and eThekwini Municipality to bring an ASPC Continental Forum
to Africa for the first time.
Speaking for the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sport &
Recreation, Head of Department Mr Ntokozo Chonco said:
”We want to give our KZN athletes the opportunity of competing
with the best on the international stage and we are grateful for
the opportunity to learn from the ASPC and our sports colleagues
from the African Continent.”
“This Forum forms part of our long term plans to develop local
athletes, we will be looking at Best Practice internationally and
then adapting it to fit within the African Context. This is a great
opportunity, there is much that we can learn from one another.
As the Province of KwaZulu-Natal, we want to ensure that our
previously disadvantaged sports practitioners are empowered
and given opportunities to excel at the highest of levels.”
The Theme for the Forum is African solutions for African Athletes
and topics ranging from Good Governance to Leadership,
Transformation and High Performance will be covered. Over
300 delegates are expected from across the Continent, including
150 Sports Leaders, Administrators, Coaches and Athletes from
KwaZulu-Natal.
The Forum has been supported by the International Olympic
Committee’s Olympic Solidarity Programme, who will be
assisting African NOC’s to attend.
“There is momentum from the successful hosting of the 10th
International Forum on Elite Sport in KwaZulu-Natal last year
and the hosting of an African Continental Forum is an ideal way
to keep the momentum and to gain knowledge and develop
networks that will assist our Athletes,” said Prime HPI Managing
Director Brendon Goodenough. “We are grateful to be partnering
with the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sport and Recreation
again, who we work closely with on the Province’s Elite Athlete
Development Programme. It is an excellent example of how
sports stakeholders can work together for the benefit of our
Athletes and our Communities,” said Goodenough.
