The current venue was built in 1989 by York Council , adding a sports hall and auditorium , café and bars to the former swimming pool site . The site was closed in 2004 and lay empty for years until 2011 when ASM Global took over management .
The York Barbican was reopened after a £ 1.5m renovation in 2011 and remains owned by the local authority . The venue offers a diverse programme of world-class events , including comedy , live music , sports , family shows and community events .
