Buddhist lamas wearing vibrant masks perform the traditional Cham dance, the main highlight of the Yuru Kabgyat festival, which is celebrated in Ladakh’ s famous Lamayuru Monastery. Held in June / July, the two-day festival is attended by a large number of Buddhist devotees not only from India but also from China, Japan, Korea, and Bhutan. The festival is dedicated to Yama, the Hindu god of death and justice, and Padmasambhava, the second Buddha and the mythological protector of animals.

The masked Cham dance has deep spiritual significance. It is believed to please the deities and protect the community from natural calamities and evil spirits.
