Before a recent trip to the Galápagos Islands, I wanted to purchase an advanced compact camera. I needed a combination of great image and video quality, a travelfriendly size that meant I could easily fit both camera and housing into my modest hand luggage, and equipment that was also robust and capable of withstanding dives to 40 metres.
I trawled the Internet for a model that suited my needs and style of photography. Reviews for the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II were consistently great, and the simplicity of the underwater housing controls also appealed to me. The Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II has full manual mode and RAW image capabilities, which for me is essential when shooting wildlife. The three-inch LCD screen makes it easy to quickly review images and ensure the correct settings are selected.
I love the DSLR-like image quality, and made full use of the HD video capabilities when filming schooling hammerhead sharks in the deep. The ISO capabilities are surprisingly good and the lens is super sharp for capturing details.
With a powerhouse of a sensor with a CMOS chip that packs in 12.8 megapixels, and the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II’ s great handling, for shooting on both land and underwater, I cannot recommend it highly enough!
