It ’ s a no-brainer really : If we want to continue diving on living reefs , in living seas , we need to start taking better care of them . It goes further though : At the rate we ’ re going , we ’ re likely to see the collapse of all fish stocks by 2050 . This has terrifying impacts for all species ( including us ) that live on a planet which is 70 percent water . Thankfully , as divers we have a unique opportunity to use the sport we love to help protect the oceans . Real ecotourism ( as explained by Judi Lowe on page 30 ) could hold the keys to the future of our reefs , along with well-managed marine protected areas ( page 46 ), and effective reef regeneration projects . Yes , there is still time to act , but there is a lot to do . We ’ d better get cracking !
