Stretching across the equator , this idyllic archipelago is 99 percent water , and boasts some of the most beautiful dive sites in the world . Coral reefs , rock pinnacles , channels , cleaning stations , caverns and overhangs are home to an incredible diversity of life – some 2,000 marine species !
Most resorts , guesthouses , hotels , and liveaboards are fully equipped with all the necessary dive gear and personnel to help your diving dreams come true .
Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll , a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve , is a must-visit spot that only allows snorkelling . When conditions are right , something magical unfolds – a huge plankton bloom turns this humble bay into a frenetic feeding ground for majestic manta rays ! This site is famous for having the largest aggregations of mantas in the world .
The South Ari Marine Park in South Ari Atoll is one of the undisputed hotspots for spotting whale sharks . Established as a marine protected area ( MPA ) by the Maldivian Government in 2009 , it is the only year-round whale shark aggregation site of its kind in the world . With its nutrientrich waters and warm temperatures , this marine park is perhaps the closest thing that whale sharks have to a “ home ”.
For divers interested in more adrenalinepacked dives , Fuvahmulah , a one-island atoll located on the southern edge of the archipelago , promises tiger shark sightings on every dive . You ’ ll also be able to spot other shark species , large pelagic fish and a good variety of colourful hard corals .
These are just a few out of hundreds of enchanting spots in the Maldives – a paradise for beginner and seasoned divers .
