EBER WARD SHIPWRECK
Located between the upper and
lower peninsulas, and linked by
the 8-kilometre long Mackinac
Bridge, Michigan’s Straits of
Mackinac is a primary tourist
draw. Its underwater preserve
lies at the northern tip of Lakes
Michigan and Huron. Known to
be a tricky area to navigate, the
region is surrounded by rocky
shallows and shoals, making
it an exciting area to explore.
Over time, a number of ships
have sunk in the straits, which
has added to the aura of mystery
pertaining to the region.
The lake’s average depth is
around 85 metres while its
deepest point is 282 metres.
Within the straits’ 12 marked
shipwrecks lies the Eber Ward,
a wooden steamer 45 metres
underwater. The ship sank on
April 9, 1909, when it was cut by
ice and foundered in water. At
around 65 metres long,
she stands upright and intact.
With the deck spanning over 32
metres and the bottom at 46
metres, along with her attached
engines and boilers, are of
particular interest to divers.
The holds can be penetrated
by experienced divers as well.
The bow of the steamer also
features a rather large and
unique mushroom-shaped
anchor. One may even have the
opportunity to discover overturned
lifeboats nearby.
Exploring this beautiful wreck
would take at least a dozen
dives or more. Apart from the
wreck, the area offers a lovely
range in marine life – home to
crawfish, freshwater sponges
and sea lamprey. It also houses
large populations of water and
predatory birds, such as ducks,
geese, swans, crows, robins,
bald eagles, hawks and vultures.
