More and more broadcasters , including the likes of Australian commercial broadcaster WIN Network , is beginning to work in virtualised environments . as potential impediments to a full IP transition .
It should not come as a surprise to see alliances such as AIMS coming together to proclaim common standards , as manufacturers place an increased emphasis on delivering future-proof investments to customers , said Jochen Bauer , marketing director , Guntermann & Drunck ( G & D ).
And when one examines various new systems approaches , a great enabler technology is KVM ( keyboard , video and mouse ).
He explained : “ When it comes to common standards , the big benefit of a KVM infrastructure is its independence from any computer platform or operating system . Hence , it can turn even a mixed system environment or island installations into a homogeneous operation layer — plus provide all the needed flexibility for system access .”
The continued transition to broadcast IP — regardless of the rate and depth of implementation across different regions — should also see broadcasters increasingly working in a virtualised environment . Australian commercial broadcaster WIN Network , for example , is now running all of its workflows on a virtualised cluster , thanks to a full Tedial Evolution media asset management ( MAM ) solution supplied and installed by Magna Systems and Engineering .
Today , Tedial Evolution sits at the heart of WIN Network ’ s broadcast network , where it manages a number of third-party systems , including Oracle ’ s SL3000 deep archive system and Telestream ’ s Vantage media processing platform .
The real benefit of Tedial Evolution , said Stevan Djokic , general manager , TV Operations , WIN Network , is how it allows WIN Network to create and automate what were previously manual processes and workflows . “ This includes the transfer of files to and from WIN and the playout to all regional centres via MediaHub ,” he explained .
While the standards issues surrounding IP continue to be ironed out , Fintan Mc Kiernan , CEO of Ideal Systems , South-east Asia , is calling for broadcasters to fully embrace the cloud , which he described as “ already making a difference ” for broadcasters .
The cloud , he explained , will affect broadcasters from multiple fronts simultaneously , from live acquisition to transcoding , to post production , to longterm archiving and to delivery .
“ In various shapes or forms , cloud will become the de facto platform for the majority of systems running in broadcasters ’ central apparatus rooms . In the very near future , cloud-based video headends will be agnostic to the fact that the TV is being consumed on a set-top box or a mobile device ,” he concluded .
Successful transformation possible with the right technology partner Whether it is the cloud , IP , 4K / UHD or over-the-top ( OTT ), broadcasters should not lose sight of the fact that these are but technology enablers in the overall drive to deliver to consumers the content on their terms .
If the definition of a broadcaster can be loosely defined as one who delivers TV and video content to consumers , then expect the number of ‘ broadcasters ’ to increase exponentially in the next few years .
It is up to traditional TV broadcasters to leverage emerging technologies to create compelling content — and to deliver the content over multiple platforms . And increasingly , local broadcasters are transforming from consumers of international and Pan-Asian content to producers of localised and diverse programme formats , observed Dennis Breckenridge , managing director , Advanced Broadcast Solutions , Asia .
While acknowledging that niche content such as English Premier League football will continue to capture the imagination , he sees localised content increasingly capturing the attention of audiences .
That aside , broadcasters are also paying more attention to workflows , operational efficiencies and even facility design , so as to assure their roadmaps and technology strategies , which when adopted , can adapt to their creative , programme and business development goals , said Breckenridge .
And as broadcasters search for technology partners who can lead them through their next technology transformation , the role of the classic “ systems integrator ” is also transforming into what he terms as “ Broadcast Technology and Operations Consultant ”, or BTOC .
The role of the BTOC , Breckenridge explained , is to move beyond merely designing and building up a broadcast facility . As integral partners , the BTOC needs to be a consultant , an operations expert and a technology roadmap designer , working alongside broadcasters to develop and roll out business strategies across an entire organisation .
At a time of uncertainty and seemingly unending wave of technology transformations , a successful technology partner is perhaps best suited to provide broadcasters with the peace of mind to successfully navigate the many challenges that lie ahead .
For instance , as the broadcast and communications industries continue to converge , broadcasters need to find a combined solution among the diverse solutions available in the market , to meet not only their current needs , but also to be future-proof and easily upgradable as needs dictate . With the right technology partner , the path ahead may not be as daunting as it may otherwise appear to be , as Poon Ka Hing , CTO of IPA Intermedia described : “ As a successful systems integrator , we are able to bridge both [ broadcast and IT ] worlds and help create better solutions for the converged industry .”
